An online degree is only valuable if it is legally recognised. In India, online and distance programs are regulated by the UGC Distance Education Bureau (UGC-DEB). Here is how to check a program before you enrol.
1. Check the UGC-DEB entitled list
Visit the official UGC-DEB website and open the list of Higher Education Institutions entitled to offer online programs for the current academic session. The university name and the specific program (for example, MBA or BCA) must both appear.
2. Confirm the NAAC grade
Under UGC rules, universities generally need a strong NAAC accreditation score to offer online degrees. Check the grade on the NAAC website rather than relying on advertisements.
3. Look for the mode of study
"Online" and "Open & Distance Learning (ODL)" are approved separately. Make sure the mode written on your admission letter matches the mode listed by UGC-DEB.
4. Avoid study-centre traps
Online degrees are delivered directly by the university. Be careful with agents promising degrees through franchise "study centres" outside the university's approved territory.
5. Ask for official fee receipts
Always pay fees to the university's official account and keep the receipt. A genuine university will never ask you to pay into a personal account.
